Some children want to say every number. Others start with one clap or one raised finger. Choose a short counting song, join in alongside your child, and repeat the part they enjoy.

Start with five
Tom Tom pairs counting to five with different drum sounds. Keep the first round small: hold up one hand and count your fingers together. There is no need to jump to a bigger number before your child wants to.
Build up to 15, then 20
Count to the Beat starts with 1–5 and adds one more number each round until 15. Chordy’s counting song takes the sequence to 20. Pick the range that suits the moment, and pause if your child wants another turn.
Try the numbers in a different way
Five Little Ducks brings counting into a familiar nursery rhyme. After singing, use toys or drawings to act out the story. The same numbers can appear in music, pictures and everyday play.
Try counting away from the screen
Line up five toys. Touch one toy for each number you say, then clap the same number of times. Add more toys when your child is ready.
